John Dermot Woods

If police officers continue to emphasize the imposition of order rather than the preservation of civic comfort, a concept that few of them understand, then we will continue to see them as outsiders and practicing fascists who subjugate, instead of them being our servants (as their pithy motto would suggest). After a newly unemployed plumber from Poppleton, who had been arrested for public intoxication, was kept in a holding cell overnight without the benefit of food or a phone call, he asked the officer who released him: When will I feel safe again? In reply, the officer, who was handing the man back his shoes and other personal items, said: Give me a break.
