Beneath the lilac bush lies a mouse’s corpse.
The expression on its face reveals the last alert
to shoot up its spine and the mind’s responding epistle,
delivered in the final fraction of the final second —

                  Dear Body,

Onto the sidewalk a rotten peach fell
                 and into its flesh crawl
a file of ants in perfect formation.
